The 31-year industry veteran, who in July succeeded Jack Messman as chairman and chief executive of Union Pacific Resources, began collecting fossils at the age of six at the family home in Birmingham, Alabama. By age 12, he wanted to study geology, though he knew nothing of its ties to petroleum. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1968 before moving on to study geophysics at Tulane University.
