DADA Thomas first tried launching an indigenous upstream company in Nigeria in 1989 while working as a petroleum engineer for Shell.
Together with some close friends, he envisioned developing a marginal field as a wholly Nigerian enterprise but the idea died, Thomas recalls, "partly because we were ahead of our time and there was no legal framework, but also because nobody was willing to leave paid employment".
