Denmark-based Maersk said the unit, on the Dumbarton field about 150 miles (240 kilometres) south-east Aberdeen, had already been shut down for upgrading.
The Janice platform was served with a safety notice by the UK’s Health & Safety Executive after a series of incidents at the facility, including a gas release on 13 August from the unit’s flare system. Investigators are also probing an oil spill thought to be related to the platform as well as a safety systems failure that forced the unit be evacuated on 23 August.
