The tax, which reportedly generated about $400 million in revenue last year, is set to increase by $200 per tonne of CO2 – up from the present level of about $209 per tonne – in a move to force offshore operators to rely on more environment-friendly onshore power sources.
The controversial move, which could potentially cost oil companies several hundred million dollars, was announced by Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg as he unveiled an “offensive” climate white paper on Wednesday.
