The parent of British Gas will now hold onto the Hummingbird Spirit until March 2016 at the Chestnut field 200 kilometres north-east of Aberdeen.
The FPSO has been working on the field since 2008 and the field has already produced 13 million barrels of oil.
The field’s life has been extended with an estimated 18 million barrels of oil estimated to still be recoverable.
