Operator ConocoPhillips has a 60% stake in the Caldita well, with Australia's Santos holding the remaining 40%.
In 2005, the partners said they had found significant hydrocarbons at the adjacent Caldita 1 well and suggested the field could contain more than 250 million barrels of oil equivalent.
Santos said that the Caldita 2 well has been plugged and abandoned as originally planned.
