Phase two of the steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) project will now see a ramp-up in production through 2017 to 118,000 barrels per day.
Total production between Surmont 1 and Surmont 2 is eventually set to reach 150,000 bpd.
Construction at Surmont 2, the largest single-phase SAGD project in the world, began in 2010. The project is situated in the Athabasca region of north-east Alberta, 63 kilometres south-east of Fort McMurray.
