United Arab Emirates' President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahayan appointed Yousef’s former deputy Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi as Adnoc director general on the weekend.
Yousef had asked for some time to be relieved of his job to pursue "other commitments," one source told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.
An Adnoc spokeswoman declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.
Yousef was the head of Adnoc for over a decade and was also general secretary of the SPC which runs the UAE's energy policy – the membership of which was also reshuffled on the weekend.
