Shell, which is developing Pearl GTL under a production sharing agreement with state-owned Qatar Petroleum, said natural gas wells were opened to allow the first sour gas to flow through a subsea pipeline into the giant onshore plant in the Ras Laffan industrial city.
Additional sections of the GTL plant will be opened progressively over the coming months. With two trains capable of producing 140,000 barrels per day together, Pearl will be the largest such plant in the world.
