The drilling services arm, which operates under the name Sperry Drilling, is thought to be worth around $3 billion and the drilling bits company could fetch as much as $2 billion, according to estimates earlier in the sales process.

It is not known if the oil-industry downturn has eroded those presumed values.

GE, which has been trying to grow its oil and gas division, is also said to be interested in parts of Baker Hughes' completions operations, according to Bloomberg, which first reported on the talks.
