The extension, to 31 December 2015, will facilitate relations between MEO and Australian government bodies, centralising where possible Commonwealth approval processes.

The environmental approval of the project, in the Timor Sea off Australia’s Northern Territory, was reviewed last month by Australian Department of Sustainability, Environment, Population & Communities.

The department requested a revision of approval terms to bring the project into line with recent approval decisions, with a number of the revisions brought about following the 2009 Montara oil spill and subsequent inquiry.
