Statoil told the New Zealand government on Friday that, after examining seismic data of the area, it decided to stop exploration work and return the two permits it had in the region.
In 2013 and 2014, the company was awarded the PEP55781 and PEP57057 exploration permits for Reinga, which are located about 85 kilometres off the west coast of Northland in the northerly part of the North Island.
