The plan under consideration is to build a bypass line at the affected area, then use that to restart the system, which was shut after operator Alyeska Pipeline Services discovered the leak in the basement of a pump station booster at the start of the pipeline in Prudhoe Bay early Saturday.
Oil prices rose more than 1% after companies cut output from Prudhoe Bay by around 600,000 barrels per day to just 5% of normal rates, and shares in major Alyeska stakeholder BP fell 1.25%.
