The UK hasn't seen such a large increase in production volumes since 1998, when petroleum and other liquids production grew by slightly more than 100,000 barrels per day.

The largest part of last year's output increase came from fields that were brought online in the second half of 2014, according to the EIA.

Other "significant" production boosts included fields that came online in 2015 and improved performance from the UK's massive offshore Buzzard oilfield.
