Drillers added 10 oil rigs in week to 19 August, bringing the total rig count to 406, compared with 674 a year ago, energy services firm Baker Hughes said on Friday.
The number of rigs drilling for gas remained flat at 83.
Texas again saw the bulk of the growth, gaining eight rigs for a total of 238. The state's Permian basin added seven rigs.
