According to a letter filed with the Texas Workforce Commission, the job cuts will take place on 21 August at Weatherford's Schlipf Road manufacturing operations facility in Katy, Texas, just west of the oil capital.
Weatherford blamed the cuts on "a loss of business opportunities".
The company expects the majority of affected employees will be placed on excused leave beginning on 31 July until the lay-off date.
