Oil spills and raging fires are rarely considered a healthy mix. But researchers from the University of Maryland in the US may have come up with a solution to tackle hydrocarbon leaks at sea with an open flame.

The trio’s paper, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, examines the behaviour of flames on horizontal pools of vaporising hydrocarbon fuel, leading to the discovery of a previously unobserved blue whirl phenomenon.
