Dushanzi is PetroChina's largest integrated refining and chemicals complex in north-west China and the 100,000-cubic metre tank was being built as part of a project to double the plant's capacity to 200,000 barrels per day.
The explosion occurred while 24 workers were carrying out antiseptic treatment on a tank being built at Dushanzi, about 260 kilometres from the Xinjiang capital of Urumqi.
