A spate of abductions hit Nigeria’s oilpatch over the past week after several months of relative calm in the normally restive Niger Delta, where armed militant groups have heavily criticised Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari for doing little to spur development and redress long-running community grievances.

Last weekend, gunmen kidnapped three oil workers from the Rivers State swamps while working aboard a rig serving Niger Delta Petroleum Resources (NDPR) at the Ogbele field on OML 54, the first marginal field awarded to an indigenous operator, where a three-well campaign is under way.
