Agustiawan, the company's former upstream director, replaces Ari Soemarno, who was relieved of his post following criticism by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono last month of his handling of a fuel shortage.

Agustiawan becomes the first woman to take the helm of the state-controlled company.

The Indonesian government also appointed Omar Sjawaldy Anwar as vice president director. Anwar stepped into the shoes of Iin Arifin Takhyan.
