The Alberta government’s new climate change policy aimed at putting a cap on emissions from oil sands operations and introducing an economy-wide carbon tax is not only being championed by environmentalists but has the support of some of Canada’s largest energy companies.

Suncor Energy, Shell, Canadian Natural Resources (CNR) and Cenovus Energy are all applauding the province’s decision to drastically change existing policy and introduce new legislation requiring all emitters — including the public in general — to be ­financially responsible for climate change.
