Political turmoil in oil and gas exporter Algeria was prolonged in the past week after the North African nation’s Constitutional Council cancelled a planned 4 July presidential election, writes Eoin O'Cinneide.

The council said on Sunday it is not possible for the vote to go ahead as only two candidates emerged, with both candidatures rejected as invalid.

Instead, the council said it is up to interim President Abdelkader Bensalah to set a new date for the vote to elect a permanent replacement for former leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who was forced to resign in early April.
