Inpex’s wholly-owned subsidiary Offshore Iwaki Petroleum (OIP) had earlier plugged and abandoned all the wells at the platform, 40 kilometres off Naraha in Fukushima prefecture.
Iwaki was the only field to be developed off Japan’s Pacific coast.
The 20,375-tonne eight- legged platform had produced gas and condensate between 1984 and 2007, with all output supplied to Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Hirono power plant.
