Sanwi signed a colonial treaty with France in 1843 and claims it never consented to Ivorian sovereignty.
It sought autonomy in 1959 and attempted secession 10 years later, but that rebellionwas crushed by the then-IvorianPresident Houphouet Boigny.
Accra hosted a Sanwi government-in-exile until 1966 when Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, was deposed, keeping alive post-colonial tensions which have always simmered below the surface.
