The wildcat, Lucapa-1, was drilled late last year in 1201 metres of water to a total vertical depth of 3340 metres. The probe hit more than 85 net metres of oil in Miocene-aged sands.

Chevron said the probe was tested in November at commercial rates from high-permeability sand in the main target area.

"The discovery will be followed by further drilling in addition to geological and engineering studies to appraise the field and assess its potential reserves," said the operator.
