Houston-based independent Apache Energy is making preparations to spud a wildcat on one of Suriname’s most prospective blocks later this year.

The planned drilling operation will be the first wildcat on Block 58, to the southeast of ExxonMobil's Liza discovery on Guyana’s Stabroek block.

Apache acquired drilling rights the 5830-square-kilometre Block 58 in 2015.

This was followed by "substantial geologic and geophysical evaluation", which identified "numerous, large, drill-ready prospects across multiple different play concepts," the company said.
