More than 2600 barrels of crude were “deliberately” set on fire in Colombia this week as state-controlled Ecopetrol said “unidentified” individuals were responsible for the attack, writes Julia Martinez.
Ecopetrol said the fire had started around 5am local time when the individuals lit four pools containing the crude in the department of Arauca, which borders Venezuela to the north.
The company also said a blockade was preventing firefighters and technicians from entering the area, which the company said was putting the community, workers and the environment at risk.
