Offshore safety incidents in Australia in 2017 were well below the long-term average despite a surge in offshore construction activity during the year, according to the country's national petroleum regulator, writes Russell Searancke.

There was a 31% increase in hours worked compared to 2016 which was largely attributable to four new liquefied natural gas projects being commissioned — Prelude, Ichthys, Wheatstone and Gorgon — said the National Offshore Petroleum Safety & Environmental Management Authority (Nopsema).
