Balloon goes up on CO2 emissions

The UK's oil and gas industry is calling for urgent talks with the government over the potential for ""irreparable damage"" to many of the country's older mature North Sea fields contained in a draft plan for implementing the European Union's emissions trading scheme.

The UK Offshore Operators' Association (UKOOA) has warned that around 95 UK North Sea installations could be at risk of early closure should the government pursue the plan for allocation of CO2 allowances outlined in the draft.

These installations have combustion power generators rated at more than 20 megawatts thermal, which makes it obligatory that they are part of the EU scheme.
