The preferred location for CO2 injection is on east coast close to the gas processing plant.
Chevron says the site has been chosen to maximise the migration distance from major geological faults and to limit disturbance to areas around the plant.
The number of injection wells into the 2500-metre deep reservoir will be confirmed following more technical studies, although the intention is to drill directionally from two or three surface locations to minimise the impact.
