What makes the Benguela-Belize platform unusual is that it is a compliant tower, only the third such unit ever to be built. The other two are in the Gulf of Mexico.
Although, like a conventional jacket, a compliant tower is still founded on the seabed, it does not stand firm in the same way against wind and wave.
By allowing a limited amount of swaying, like a reed in a wind, the weight of steel needed can be greatly reduced while still retaining the load-bearing ability of a bottom-standing platform.
