The nine-month, 33,000 nautical-mile race, which pitted 12 72-foot yachts against one another, is renowned as one of the hardest tests in world sailing as it heads the "wrong way" around the globe, against prevailing winds and currents.

Two oil company-sponsored yachts, BG Spirit and BP Explorer, set out with the other competitors from Portsmouth last October.

But it was the BG Spirit that claimed victory, winning the final leg from La Rochelle in France as well as claiming the title of overall winner.
