Australia’s BHP Petroleum has filed plans with the Canadian authorities to start wildcatting in the Orphan basin off Newfoundland & Labrador in 2021.
BHP joins several other oil majors — including ExxonMobil, CNOOC International, BP, Chevron, Equinor and Husky Energy — which are having exploration drilling campaigns evaluated for offshore Newfoundland & Labrador.
BHP’s environmental assessment document details plans to drill up to 20 probes between now and 2028 in two exploration licences, ELs 1157 and 1158.
