Players now have a range of modern techniques in their toolkit — including more advanced seismic data, better reservoir imaging and electromagnetic data — that enable them to look with fresh eyes at the mature area.

However, it has also required out-of-the box geological thinking by the likes of Lundin Petroleum to tap the area’s latent resource potential, with a case in point being the Swedish explorer’s discovery in 2010 of Avaldsnes — later to become part of the giant Johan Sverdrup find — just a few metres away from a dry well drilled by the former Elf Aquitaine in 1971.
