Argentina's YPF this week reported an explosion at a well on the declining Loma La Lata giant gas field amid growing concerns about safety standards in the Neuquen basin, writes Gareth Chetwynd.

The explosion was reported at the Loma La Lata West (LLLO X-2) site, in the area known as Sierra Barrosa.

Contingency plans were activated in consultation with Houston-based emergency response specialist Wild Well Control and the location was cordoned off, with no reports of injuries and no continuing risk to the local population, YPF said.
