The explosion and resulting fires destroyed LNG production trains and closed Algeria's largest refinery in the port city of Skikda, which lies 500 kilometres east of the capital Algiers. Port operations were also halted.

Mohamed Meziane, chief executive of state-run oil company Sonatrach, put initial costs of rebuilding the devastated LNG facilities at $800 million.

It destroyed three of the six LNG production trains at Skikda, which accounted for a quarter of Algeria's LNG shipments.
