Several hundred thousand acres could be part of the new agreement being thrashed out. A source with knowledge of the talks said BP and Lewis are “adding to the position” but declined to offer specifics.
A Lewis official declined comment. A spokesman for BP in Houston said only that the company had nothing to confirm or announce “at this time”.
BP is planning to disclose earnings results for the fourth quarter on 2 February with a strategy presentation in March.
