A combination of good weather, superb work by the Smit-led salvage team, and undoubtedly good luck saved BP's rump from a billion-dollar disaster. That is the good news.

The bad news is BP thus far is at a loss to explain an incident that never should have happened in the first place.

Obviously, sometime after the crew evacuated the platform for the arrival of Hurricane Dennis, huge amounts of water accumulated at the port side of the hull, causing it to sink to the point of capsizing.
