If successful, the joint engineering effort — Project 20K — could reap an additional 10 billion to 20 billion barrels of resources in BP’s portfolio that is currently inaccessible with today’s technology, which has a technical limit of 15,000 psi pressure and 250 degrees Fahrenheit (121 degrees Celcius).
Making 20K reality would also aid development of big but challenging deep-water discoveries, including Kaskida and Tiber in the Paleogene play in the Gulf of Mexico.
