"Human ingenuity always finds something to do. It is up to us to try and track it down," BP's chief executive John Browne said this week. The level is almost double the 2002 total, partly because of tighter procedures within the company.
The figure was published in BP's annual Sustainability Report, which details the company's efforts to improve corporate governance and handle environmental and social issues in its operations around the world.
