Documents obtained under UK Freedom of Information rules shed new light on the lucky escape, which happened when 11.5 kilogrammes of natural gas liquids escaped through a pinhole leak in corroded pipework. Upstream revealed earlier this year that Marathon had been censured by the UK Health & Safety Executive (HSE) because no automatic gas detectors had been fitted in the outside area of the platform where the leak happened.
