BRAZILIAN President Dilma Rousseff has been thrown out of office, ending 13 years of rule by the Workers’ Party and opening a new chapter in Brazil’s turbulent modern history.

Brazil’s Senators voted 61-20 in favour of making Rousseff’s suspension from office definitive — at least 54 had to approve the motion for impeachment to be final.

Acting President Michel Temer — who was Rousseff’s running mate — will now take office for the remaining two years and three months of Rousseff’s term, although he was scheduled to fly out to lead a Brazilian delegation to China immediately after the vote.
