The 39-year-old rose to prominence in February following the announcement of a record $6.75 billion deal between British supermajor BP, the Alfa Group and US-based Renova/Access Industries to create the TNK-BP joint venture.

Fridman joined the ranks of Russia's business heavyweights in the summer of 1997 when Alfa Group and Renova/Access teamed up to buy a controlling stake in Tyumen Oil (TNK) from the Russian government at a privatisation auction, which many industry observers believe was rigged in their favour.
