More specifically, since making the 500 million barrel or so oil find five years after entering the North Sea, EnCana has become something of a "teacher's pet" for the Department of Trade & Industry, showing others what can be achieved through exploration in a supposedly drilled-out play.

The Calgary-based group's UK managing director Alan Booth admits that the government is "looking to companies like ourselves" to secure the North Sea's future, and coyly says that because of Buzzard his company "gets listened to more than you'd expect for a company only producing 10,000 barrels per day in UK waters".
