INDIA’S leading opposition party, the Indian National Congress, has approached President Pranab Mukherjee seeking a judicial probe into $3 billion of spending by Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) on the Deen Dayal offshore gas field.

A delegation of senior Congress leaders from Gujarat recently approached the president with allegations about what it sees as wasteful spending and potential scams.

The delegation claimed that the Gujarat state government, which owns GSPC, had given deliberately misleading estimates of gas reserves, borrowed enormous amounts of money for an unviable project and resorted to improper contracting practices.
