Mexican legislators have introduced a measure that would prohibit hydraulic fracturing in the country, writes Katherine Schmidt.

The measure put forward by senators from the ruling leftist Morena party criticises past policies, including those of former president Enrique Pena Nieto, as contributing to the country’s current declines in gas production.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has spoken out against using the technology on environmental grounds, and has renewed his opposition in recent weeks after Pemex was granted approval to test unconventional potential in a field plan reviewed by the National Hydrocarbons Commission.
