A farming group in Alberta said energy companies should be stopped from removing groundwater to produce coalbed methane until a review of regulations is completed in November.

At that time a multi-stakeholder advisory committee will make recommendations to government departments and the Alberta Energy & Utilities Board on possible improvements to natural gas rules in the province.

The group said residents in the nearby US states of Wyoming and Montana have seen their land destroyed and water wells depleted because producers have pumped large volumes of groundwater to the surface.
