Located in the Western Canada Sedimentary basin, the Cardium play of Central Alberta is no stranger to Canada’s energy industry.
Since it was first discovered in 1953 it has been a source of natural gas from the Cardium formation and light oil from the Pembina field in Alberta.
In recent years activity in the play has waned because many of the vertical wells stopped producing light oil, and plans for new wells were uneconomic due to the formation’s tight rock.
