Moscow business daily Vedomosti revealed this week that Karpov's Moscow-based oil company Petromir, which he founded in 1999, has hit success.
Petromir holds exploration and development licences for the Angaro-Lenskoye field, where possible gas reserves were recently estimated at a 1.2 trillion cubic metres, according to a statement from Russia's reserves committee.
Although the estimate is based on the Russian reserve classification system, which is not as rigid as in the West, industry observers are nonetheless excited by Angaro-Lenskoye's prospects, given that Russia has not discovered a large oil or gas field for the last decade.
