Mexican regulators have approved an exploration plan filed by US supermajor Chevron on a deep-water block in the Salina del Istmo basin that could see drilling of an initial well as soon as the second quarter of 2021, writes Kathrine Schmidt.

The US supermajor was awarded the Area 22 block in Mexico’s Round 2.4 for deep-water in early 2018, and operates the acreage in partnership with Mexican state oil company Pemex and Japan’s Inpex.
